Royals reinstate C Perez

The Kansas City Royals took starting catcher Salvador Perez off the restricted list among a wave of roster moves prior to Tuesday's opener of a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins.

Perez had been away from the team since May 25 to return to his native Venezuela following the death of his grandmother. The 23-year-old backstop will start behind the plate and bat seventh in Tuesday's game.

Catcher Adam Moore was optioned to Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move, with reliever Louis Coleman also sent to the Pacific Coast League club while right-hander Kelvin Herrera was recalled from the Storm Chasers.

Herrera tied for the team lead with 19 holds while posting a solid 2.35 earned run average in his first full major league season last year, but was sent to Omaha in late May after going 2-4 with a 4.87 ERA in 19 games with Kansas City. The 23-year-old did not allow a run in five appearances with the Storm Chasers.

Coleman tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings with the Royals after briefly replacing Herrera in the bullpen, and earned the win in Thursday's 4-2 decision at St. Louis.

The Royals also claimed outfielder Quintin Berry off waivers from the Detroit Tigers and optioned him to Omaha.

Berry batted .258 with 21 stolen bases in 94 games for the AL champion Tigers last season, but failed to make the club out of spring training this year and was hitting just .168 with Triple-A Toledo.
