The former top-10 star from Spain topped Serbian qualifier Pedja Krstin 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 on the indoor surface at Olympic Stadium.
A pair of men reached the quarterfinals, as fifth-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut got past big-hitting Aussie Sam Groth 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4) and eighth-seeded Italian and 2012 champion Andreas Seppi bested Croat Ivan Dodig, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) in second-round action.
Another opening-round result saw seventh-seeded Russian favorite and 2009 titlist Mikhail Youzhny maul qualifier and fellow countryman Victor Baluda 6-3, 6-4.
This week's winner will claim $140,750.
