Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - No. 3 seed Tommy Robredo was a first-round winner Monday at the $1.55 million Rio Open tennis event.
Robredo handled 18-year-old wild card Elias Ymer of Sweden 6-4, 6-3.
Also on Monday, Thiemo de Bakker rallied past Guilherme Clezar of Brazil 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, Finnish veteran Jarkko Nieminen overcame Italian qualifier Marco Cecchinato 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 and Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer came back to beat Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
This week's top seeds are Spanish stars Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer. The former world No. 1 Nadal is the reigning champion, having beaten Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov in last year's Rio finale.
The 2015 champ will pocket $343,000.
