Ricky Martin To Sing World Cup Theme Song, Worldwide Contest Launched

Ricky Martin will once again be the voice of the World Cup.

The Boricua singer was chosen to sing the theme song for the FIFA 2014 World Cup to be held in Brazil. But instead of writing the song himself, he is asking songwriters to submit theme songs for a contest.

He has partnered with Sony to present “Super Song: The Global Music Contest for the 2014 FIFA World Cup”

“It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are, you have the chance to be a superstar and write the song for the next World Cup and I will record it,” Martin, 41, says in a video promoting the contest.

While further information on the contest is not available yet, it is set to begin in December.

Martin confirmed in early August that he would appear at next year’s World Cup, but would not go into further details into what capacity.

This will be the singer’s second involvement with the soccer competition. In the 1998 World Cup in France, Martin sang the theme “La Copa De La Vida (The Cup of Life).” The song became a worldwide hit and took Martin’s career to an even larger audience.

Colombian singer Shakira sang the theme “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
