They say it's tough at the top, but Newcastle striker Aleksander Mitrovic learned that in the Premier League it's even tougher at the bottom.

Newcastle started the day outside of the dreaded relegation zone a point ahead of bitter local rivals Sunderland, but the Magpies toiled to a 0-0 draw away at bottom-club Aston Villa, in the process becoming the only Premier League side to fail to beat the already-relegated Villans this season.

Meanwhile, back in the north east of England, a Whabi Khazri-inspired Sunderland came from behind twice to beat Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, meaning they have the chance to relegate Newcastle on Wednesday night if they win their game in hand at home against Everton.

Sadly, though, Mitrovic didn't know any of that. There was false hope in his eyes as he spoke of a Sunderland defeat that never happened, and it was left to a brutal TV reporter to deliver the savage news.

Mitrovic himself has struggled for goals and form this season following a big-money move from Anderlecht last summer, and missed a couple of great chances to give Newcastle all three points at Villa Park. It was just a bad day all round for the Serbian.
