The Lions are no longer strapped for cash to start the season, as the team has reportedly freed up some cap space by restructuring the contract belonging to Pro Bowl wide receiver Golden Tate.
Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that the "simple restructure" frees up more than $2 million in cap room and drops Tate's cap hit from $5.35 million to $3.1 million in 2015.
Detroit signed Tate to a five-year, $31 million deal last March. The receiver responded by putting together the most productive season of his career to date: 99 catches for 1,331 yards. He also added four touchdown receptions.
Tate, 27, is expected to play a large role for the Lions again this year. He and fellow wideout Calvin Johnson must power Detroit's offense as quarterback Matthew Stafford's top two receiving targets.
