(STATS) - Furman is bringing back Des Kitchings to become its new head football coach, according to a report by SI.com.
Kitchings, an assistant coach at North Carolina State since 2012, is a former Furman player and assistant coach. If named to the Furman post, he would replace Bruce Fowler, who resigned earlier this month after a 3-8 season and a 27-43 record in six years.
Kitchings was a standout wide receiver and return specialist at Furman, a senior when the 1999 squad won the first of three straight Southern Conference championships. As a Paladins assistant coach, he worked with the tight ends and special teams from 2004-07. They won a conference title in 2004 and reached the FCS national semifinals in '05.
He was an assistant coach at Vanderbilt from 2008-10 and Air Force in 2011 before moving to North Carolina State. This season, he served as the Wolfpack's assistant head coach for offense, recruiting coordinator and running backs coach.
