Washington Redskins nose tackle Barry Cofield and tight end Jordan Reed could be sidelined for extended periods with injuries from the season opener.

Cofield has a high right ankle sprain, and Reed has a strained left hamstring from Sunday's 17-6 loss to the Houston Texans.

Coach Jay Gruden on Monday did not sound optimistic about a quick return for either player, but he said he wanted to get the results from their MRIs before giving a timetable.

High ankle sprains usually require several weeks of recovery, while hamstring injuries are notoriously unpredictable. The Redskins are working out tight ends this week in case they learn that Reed is expected to have a prolonged absence.
