The Boston Red Sox placed pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a right upper trapezius strain.

Matsuzaka is coming off the shortest outing of his career on Monday when he was shelled for five runs on four hits and two walks in one-plus innings. He threw just 28 pitches.

He has pitched to an 0-3 record with a 6.65 ERA in five starts for Boston this season.

To replace Matsuzaka, the Red Sox recalled first baseman Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Gomez was hitless in two games for Boston earlier this season, but is hitting .311 with 26 doubles, 19 home runs and 55 RBI through 72 games for Pawtucket this year.
