Real Madrid signs Essien on loan from Chelsea

Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid signed midfielder Michael Essien on a one-year loan from Chelsea on Friday.

Essien, 29, joined Chelsea when it was managed by Jose Mourinho in 2005, and rejoins his former boss in Spain with Real Madrid. Essien helped the Blues win two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League.

He scored 25 goals in 247 appearances for Chelsea, and is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world when healthy.

Essien has been capped 52 times for Ghana.
