The Colorado Rapids signed midfielder Shane O'Neill on Tuesday from the Rapids Academy as a Homegrown Player.

The 18-year-old O'Neill was born in Ireland, and joined the Rapids Academy in 2009. He has 10 goals in 15 fixtures for the Rapids Under-18 team this season.

O'Neill has been training with the Rapids first team this season, and has also played four reserve team matches this year. He is the second Homegrown Player, a roster designation that allows MLS clubs to sign youth system player that do not count against the salary cap, to be signed by the Rapids.

Colorado signed Davy Armstrong in August 2010 as its first Homegrown Player.

Per league and team policy, terms of O'Neill's contract were not disclosed.
