Eindhoven, Netherlands – Jeremain Lens netted a first-half double on Saturday as PSV Eindhoven pummeled Groningen, 5-2, at the Philips Stadion.
Tim Matavz opened the scoring for PSV just three minutes into the match and Dries Mertens converted a penalty kick three minutes later to quickly give the hosts a two-goal margin.
Lens collected his first tally of the day in the 13th minute and Mark Van Bommel found the back of the net in the 41st before Lens bagged his second of the day on the stoke of halftime to give the home side a comfortable 5-0 advantage at halftime.
Michael de Leeuw netted a double in the second half for Groningen, but it was too little too late as PSV claimed the three points to remain four points behind Ajax for the top spot.
Elsewhere in the Eredivisie on Saturday, Nwofor Uche and Mike van Duinen exchanged goals as Den Haag and Venlo played to a 1-1 draw, while Roda cruised to a 3-1 result over RKC Waalwjik, but they are still one point from safety with 30 points from 32 matches.
In Saturday's final Eredivisie fixture, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson scored in the 47th minute and a Tim Gilissen own goal secured a 2-0 win for Ajax over NAC Breda, which remains in 14th place with 35 points.
