South Carolina and new Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp got some good news Wednesday. Four-star QB commit Jake Bentley, a 6-4, 220-pound prospect some recruiting service rank as high as the nation's No. 2 quarterback, announced that he is reclassifying and enrolling in college this summer. Bentley had been a commitment in the Class of 2017 but now will be able to join the Gamecocks for this coming season and compete in a wide-open QB battle.
"After doing some research and confirming with my academic counsellors (sic), I will be able to graduate this year," Bentley tweeted. "Because I can graduate early, I will be joining the excitement of Gamecock football this summer."
Freshman Brandon McIlwain and senior Perry Orth are viewed as the frontrunners of what has been a five-man QB battle. In 2015, Orth ranked 10th in the SEC in passing as the Gamecocks struggled to a dismal 3-9 record in Steve Spurrier's final season at Carolina.
Bentley comes from a football family. His father Bobby joined Muschamp's staff as the Gamecocks running backs coach earlier this offseason. The elder Bentley coached at one of South Carolina's top high school programs in Byrnes and also had been the head coach at Presbyterian College.
