The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled third A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

The second overall pick in the 2008 draft batted only .196 with three home runs and 15 RBI in 56 games for the Pirates this season. Alvarez batted .256 with five home runs and 19 RBI in 35 games for Indianapolis.

The Pirates also activated reliever Evan Meek from the 60-day disabled list while recalling pitchers Jeff Locke, Aaron Thompson and Daniel Moskos and selecting the contract of pitcher Jared Hughes from Indianapolis.

Meek had been on the DL since June 8 with right shoulder tendinitis. The righty is 1-1 with a 4.40 earned run average with 12 strikeouts and five walks in 17 appearances this season.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Pittsburgh transferred pitchers Paul Maholm and Kevin Correia from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.
