TORONTO – The Philadelphia Phillies recalled catcher Erik Kratz from Triple-A Lehigh Valley Saturday and optioned right-hander B.J. Rosenberg to Triple-A.
Kratz was promoted to fill in for catcher Carlos Ruiz, who left in the seventh inning of Friday's loss to the Blue Jays with a sore muscle in his left side.
Brian Schneider, who replaced Ruiz Friday, started for the Phillies on Saturday.
Ruiz, who was injured swinging at strike three to end the sixth inning Friday, leads Philadelphia with a .362 average. He has eight homers, 35 RBIs and a team-high 16 doubles.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said Friday he expected Ruiz to miss several days. However, Ruiz took batting practice before Saturday's game and said he was ready to play if needed. He called the injury a cramp, not a strain.
