San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres officially announced the signing of starting pitcher James Shields to a four-year contract on Wednesday.

The deal, which will reportedly pay the right-hander approximately $75 million, includes a club option for 2019.

Shields, 33, had a 14-8 record with a 3.21 ERA in 34 starts for the American League champion Kansas City Royals last season. He struggled in the playoffs, however, losing both of his starts against the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.

The veteran hurler has been a workhorse throughout his career, pitching more than 200 innings every year since 2007.

Shields owns a career 114-90 record and a 3.72 ERA over nine seasons with Tampa Bay and Kansas City. He was shipped by the Rays to the Royals in December 2012 as part of a multi-player trade that included outfielder Wil Myers, who also was added by the Padres this offseason.
