Ortiz out with back spasms

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will not play in Wednesday's series finale with the Toronto Blue Jays because of back spasms.

Ortiz was pulled in the first inning of Tuesday's 18-6 victory with the issue.

As a result, Ryan Lavarnway will be inserted into the lineup as the DH, batting sixth, while second baseman Dustin Pedroia will bat cleanup.

The 35-year-old Dominican will have a seat despite the fact that he is a lifetime .345 hitter with a .424 on-base percentage and .621 slugging percentage in 33 plate appearances against Jays starter Ricky Romero.
