Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - It wasn't the best round he played all week, but Carlos Ortiz did enough on Sunday to win the Portland Open.
Ortiz closed with an even-par 71 to finish at 14-under-par 270. The victory was his third of the season on the Web.com Tour, and that earned him an automatic promotion to the PGA Tour.
"I've been playing great the last few months, and it was a matter of trusting myself. I've been working hard and doing the right things," Ortiz said in a TV interview. "I won twice at the beginning of the year, then I started doubting myself. I was thinking too much about the future."
Jason Gore, the tour's all-time wins leader, rallied with a 5-under 66 to grab a share of second place. He was joined at minus-13 by Adam Hadwin, who carded a 1-under 70 in the final round on the Witch Hollow Course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
Colt Knost grabbed fourth place at 11-under 273 thanks to a closing 70. Steven Alker (70), James Nitties (71), Scott Pinckney (71) and Blayne Barber (68) shared fifth place at minus-10.
The top 25 on the money list earned their PGA Tour cards for next season, while the top 75 on the money list gained a spot in the Web.com Tour finals, which begin next week.
Kyle Reifers struggled to a 3-over 74 on Sunday, but a birdie on the 17th and a par at the last helped him move from No. 27 to No. 25 on the money list. He will return to the PGA Tour next year thanks to that closing par putt.
James Nitties and Whee Kim were the only two to move into the top 75 on the money list. They bumped Zack Fischer and Roberto Diaz out of the top 75.
Ortiz looked like he would cruise to victory early on. After a par on the first, he birdied the second to push his lead to four strokes.
The Mexican converted back-to-back birdie efforts at four and five to move to minus-17. Ortiz tripped to a bogey on the seventh, but he was still three clear of Hadwin.
Ortiz faltered to another bogey on No. 9 and that trimmed his margin to two. Around the turn, he stumbled to his third bogey of the day at the 11th.
Hadwin bogeyed the second to dip to minus-11. He fought back with birdies on the fourth and fifth to get to 13-under. Despite several chances, Hadwin finished with 13 consecutive pars to share second place.
Gore, who was eight groups ahead of Ortiz, traded a bogey at the second for a birdie on the fourth. He moved to minus-9 with a birdie on the par-5 seventh.
Around the turn, Gore made back-to-back birdie chances at 10 and 11. After five pars in a row. Gore birdied the final two holes to post 13-under.
But it wasn't enough. Ortiz followed his bogey on the 11th with seven pars in a row to close out the victory.
"This week, I got a couple of lucky bounces, especially on 13 today. I hit a tree and (my ball) came back to the green," said Ortiz in a televised interview. "Everything went my way this week, and I'm just really happy."
NOTES: Ortiz earned $144,000 for the victory ... His other wins came in his fourth and sixth starts of the season at the Panama Claro Championship and in his home country at the El Bosque Mexico Championship ... The Web.com Tour finals start next week in Indiana with the Hotel Fitness Championship, where Trevor Immelman is expected to defend his title.
