New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has been suspended 25 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for an amphetamine.

The ban started Friday and will run through any postseason games the Orioles play. Baltimore began the weekend with a 10-game lead in the American League East with 17 games remaining.

Davis issued an apology on Friday, saying he took Adderall by mistake after legally using in the past.

"I apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Orioles organization and especially the fans," said Davis in a statement released by the players' association. "I made a mistake by taking Adderall. I had permission to use it in the past, but do not have a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) this year. I accept my punishment and will begin serving my suspension immediately."

Davis is batting just .196 this season with 26 homers and 72 runs batted in. He led the American League with 53 homers and 138 RBI last year.
