NNS: Logano Tops Phoenix Qualifying

Joey Logano, who has burnished his driving resume with remarkable success in the Nationwide Series this season, won the pole Saturday for the Great Clips 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

The pole is Logano’s sixth of the season. In 20 Nationwide starts, he has eight wins and 16 top 10s. He ran 132.621 miles per hour Saturday.

“When I got done with that lap, I didn’t think it was good enough,” Logano said. “It’s a good sign when the car has a lot of speed in it. I think it’s pretty good in race trim.”

The qualifying session was a big downer for Elliott Sadler, who enters the next-to-last race of the season tied for the point lead with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. He qualified 16th on his first lap, but got loose on the second lap and slammed the outside wall, damaging the right side of the car. The team will go to a backup for this afternoon’s race and will start at the back of the field.

Stenhouse qualified eighth.

Following Logano in the top five were Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon (who’s third in points, 21 back), Sam Hornish Jr. and Brian Vickers.

In the second five were Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, Stenhouse, Jason Leffler and Brian Scott.
