NHL to hold two games at Yankee Stadium in 2014

The National Hockey League announced on Wednesday that its 2014 Stadium Series will make two visits to New York for a pair of outdoor contests at Yankee Stadium.

The league's outdoor stadium series, which already includes 2014 games at Chicago's Soldier Field, Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium and Michigan Stadium, will now feature the three New York City metro area NHL teams - the New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders.

The Rangers will play the Devils on Jan. 26, 2014, as well as the Islanders on Jan. 29.

It will be the first time that hockey has ever played at the new Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009, and mark the first-ever hockey contests played outdoors in New York City.

"The innovative nature of the Stadium Series affords the opportunity to have all three NHL teams in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area play, outdoors, at one of the most-recognized stadiums in the world," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said.

The Rangers have played one outdoor game in their history, defeating the Flyers in the 2012 NHL Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Other NHL Stadium Series games scheduled for next season include the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium on Jan. 25; Detroit against Toronto at Michigan Stadium in the New Year's Day Winter Classic; and the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field on March 1.
