Holy horse cakes! What a football weekend. These four games were reminders why I decided a long time ago to stop making bets and gambling.
Let’s start with the game of the week.
Tim Tebow: Superstar, Broncos upset the Steelers
In the biggest upset of the season the Denver Broncos beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in OT with an 80 yard touchdown pass from QB Tim Tebow to WR Demaryius Thomas to advance in the playoffs and win 29-23.
Tebow had his best throwing game since turning pro throwing for 2 touchdowns and running for one.
Heavenly number: Tebow threw for more yards than he has ever thrown for as a professional, 316 yards in the air. John 3:16… Tebow 3:16? For God so loved Tim Tebow that he gave the 8-8 Broncos a playoff win over the tough Pittsburgh Steelers. [Concept credited to Nathan Kyght from Facebook]
Magic Buster: The biggest discredit to the “Tebow is magic” theory is the fact that the Steelers had so many players injured before the game. Hell, QB Ben Roethlisburger had been really struggling with his sprained ankle, lost his starting center and starting RB and that was before they started playing today.
Still the fact that the Broncos led the Steelers 20-6 at half before Pittsburgh rallied to tie the game is pretty amazing. But lets not all start singing his praises until they can at least take out the top seeded New England Patriots who the Broncos meet next week and who crushed them 4 weeks ago.
If Tebow wins next week with a Hail Mary, then the people of Denver may start warming up the Choir.
Giants Destroy the Falcons
The sleeping New York Giants have awoken and demolished the “playoff challenged” Atlanta Falcons to advance in the playoffs. The final score 24-2.
Giants QB Eli Manning is having a career year and next week will face the league’s best Green Bay packers at Lambeau Field.
That’s pretty much it.
The real story for me is that once again the Falcons were bounced out in the first round of the post season and once again Falcons TE Tony González finds himself going home early.
If the Falcons don’t win it all next year the future Hall of Famer may have to just settle for being the best tight end ever without a championship.
Giants WR Victor Cruz was quiet today with two catches for 28 yards.
Saturday Games:
The Houston Texans won their first game by beating up the lowly Cincinnati Bengals, making head coach Marvin Lewis 0-3 in his three playoff runs with the team. The final score was 31-10.
The Texans looked good after losing three straight to end the season and RB Arian Foster had 153 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
The Texans face the Baltimore Ravens next week. Should be a good one.
Saints' Offense Beats Lions
The New Orleans Saints beat the Detroit Lions 45-28 and now will face the San Francisco 49ers next week.
The Lions hadn’t been in the playoffs since 1999 (when I graduated high school, time flies).
They put up a good fight but the Saints’ QB Drew Brees is having a record setting year.
