GLENEAGLES, Scotland – U.S. captain Tom Watson sent out his two youngest rookies against Europe's best player in the Ryder Cup, and it was a short match.
The Americans barely broke a sweat.
Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed made an auspicious debut in the Ryder Cup on Friday by running off five birdies in a six-hole stretch for a 5-and-4 victory over Ian Poulter and Scottish favorite Stephen Gallacher.
The Americans got even more help for another rookie. Jimmy Walker holed out twice for birdie to keep him and Rickie Fowler in the match. Walker made one last birdie on the 18th hole to earn an unlikely halve against U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer and Thomas Bjorn.
The rookies sparked the Americans to an early lead at Gleneagles.
