Edinson Cavani and Marek Hamsik scored as Napoli defeated Palermo, 2-0, on Tuesday to tighten its grip on third place in Serie A and a Champions League berth next season.

Napoli entered the game tied on 55 points with Udinese, Inter Milan and Lazio, and turned its edge in goal differential into a three-point lead with the rest of its challengers for the final Champions League berth playing Wednesday.

Cavani bagged his 23rd goal of the season, which is second in the league, with just 16 minutes played, and Hamsik added his ninth goal of the season with 10 minutes left in the opening half at the Stadio San Paolo.

Palermo saw its winless streak reach six matches and it remained in 15th place and seven points from danger. Palermo will actually secure survival Wednesday, unless Lecce downs unbeaten leader Juventus.

Chievo 0, Roma 0

Verona, Italy - Roma settled for a 0-0 tie at Chievo on Tuesday as its winless run reached four matches in Serie A at rain-soaked Stadio M.A. Bentegodi.

Under torrential rains that left puddles all over the field, Roma struggled to create many good scoring chances. Roma is seventh on 52 points, three behind a group of three clubs on 55 points that all are yet to play this week.

Only the top five clubs qualify for European competitions next season.

Chievo saw its winless streak reach five and it remained 12th in the standings with most of the league yet to play Wednesday.
