One day after announcing that Eddie Johnson had signed with Major League Soccer, Todd Durbin, MLS Executive Vice President of Competition and Player Relations, claimed that the deal has fallen through.

"We had reached agreement, subject to formal documents," Durbin told MLSsoccer.com on Wednesday. "It's unfortunate the player did not want to conclude a formal agreement, but we wish him well in his future endeavors."

Durbin made the initial announcement of Johnson returning to MLS on Tuesday during a conference call with media members to announce the new MLS Designated Player rule, but the United States international has since declined a formal deal with the league.

Johnson is currently without a club after being released from English club Fulham.
