Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets designated outfielder Bobby Abreu for assignment on Monday.

Abreu hit just .238 with one homer and 14 RBI in 67 games with the Mets this season.

An 18-year veteran, Abreu is a career .291 hitter with 288 homers and 1,363 RBI.

To replace Abreu on the roster, the Mets recalled outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis from Triple-A Las Vegas.
