Mauer likely out for remainder of season

Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer will likely miss the remainder of the season with mild pneumonia.

Mauer received the diagnosis from the Mayo Clinic Thursday after a lingering upper respiratory infection failed to dissipate. Medication and two weeks rest were recommended.

In the first year of an eight-year, $184 million contract, the 2009 MVP appeared in just 82 games this season while dealing with a litany of ailments, including a stiff neck and bilateral leg weakness.

The 28-year-old hit .287 with three home runs -- both career lows.
