Minneapolis, MN – Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer will likely miss the remainder of the season with mild pneumonia.
Mauer received the diagnosis from the Mayo Clinic Thursday after a lingering upper respiratory infection failed to dissipate. Medication and two weeks rest were recommended.
In the first year of an eight-year, $184 million contract, the 2009 MVP appeared in just 82 games this season while dealing with a litany of ailments, including a stiff neck and bilateral leg weakness.
The 28-year-old hit .287 with three home runs -- both career lows.
