New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Major League Soccer announced Tuesday that Seattle Sounders FC's Chad Marshall has been named the 2014 Defender of the Year.

Marshall, in his first season with Seattle, was a mainstay in defense for the Sounders, who claimed the U.S. Open Cup and MLS Supporters' Shield.

The 30-year-old caused opponents problems on both ends of the pitch in his 31 league appearances, supplementing his aerial prowess in defense by adding one goal and three assists on the offensive end.

It is Marshall's third Defender of the Year honor, the most any one player has won in MLS history. He also claimed the award in 2008 and 2009 with the Columbus Crew.
