Miami Marlins right-hander Jarred Cosart has been cleared to resume throwing Friday, a positive step for the pitcher who has battled vertigo-related issues for much of the season.
Cosart has responded well to treatment for a left inner ear disorder, to the point where the Marlins believe he has a chance to return to the rotation by the end of the month.
"Hopefully sometime soon we'll get him some games with the (Class) A ball club, and then get him back here with us," Miami manager Dan Jennings said. "It would be great if it is sometime in August, because we could use the depth there."
Acquired from the Houston Astros at last year's trade deadline, the 25-year-old Cosart has labored through a rocky season, logging a 1-4 record and 5.36 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts) before he was demoted to the minors following a dismal outing on July 4.
Cosart, who began the season in the starting rotation, went 4-4 with a 2.39 ERA with the Marlins over the last two months in 2014. He posted a 9-7 mark and 4.41 ERA with the Astros prior to the trade.
