CARY, N.C. (AP) A sports marketing firm implicated in an investigation into corruption in world soccer has sold its North American Soccer League team.
The sale of the Carolina RailHawks from Traffic Sports USA to Cary-based entrepreneur Stephen N. Malik was announced Friday. The team says he assumed full ownership immediately and will represent the team on the NASL's Board of Governors.
Aaron Davidson, the president of Miami-based Traffic Sports, has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and other charges stemming from the FIFA scandal.
Davidson was among 14 people named in an indictment accusing soccer officials of accepting more than $150 million in bribes.
Prosecutors say they took cash in exchange for rigging marketing contracts and the selection of the host country for the 2010 World Cup.
