Leverkusen, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Bayer Leverkusen announced on Monday that the club has signed striker Josip Drmic from Nurnberg on a five-year contract.
Drmic was reportedly targeted by Arsenal, but Leverkusen has beaten the English side to the signature of the Switzerland international, who will remain in the Bundesliga after finishing third in the league with 17 goals for Nurnberg this season.
However, Drmic's scoring exploits weren't enough to keep Nurnberg from being relegated, which was confirmed on Saturday, triggering a clause in his contract that allows him to leave for $7 million.
"We have laid down a clear marker for our future approach," Leverkusen's CEO, Michael Schade, said. "Josip Drmic has shown his extra quality over the course of the Bundesliga campaign and he is one of the top strikers in the Bundesliga. We've brought him in to significantly increase our attacking capability and equip the team to have another go at the Champions League."
The 21-year-old Drmic joins a Leverkusen side that finished fourth in the Bundesliga this season and reached the round of 16 in the Champions League.
