Lisbon, Portugal (SportsNetwork.com) - The top three teams in Portugal each failed to win this weekend, leaving Benfica two points clear at the top of the league after Sporting Lisbon failed to take advantage of the stumble.
Saturday's action saw FC Porto lose 1-0 at Maritimo with Derley converting from the penalty spot in the 13th minute.
The defeat gave both Benfica and Sporting Lisbon the chance to extend their lead over the defending champions, but Benfica was only able to come away with a 1-1 draw at Gil Vicente.
After a scoreless first half, Benfica was reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute as Guillherme Siqueira was sent off.
However, Lima's penalty kick five minutes later put Benfica up 1-0, only for Vitor Goncalves to answer for Gil Vicente with the equalizer in the 73rd minute.
Those results handed Sporting Lisbon a great opportunity to join Benfica at the top of the league, but Sporting was held to a 0-0 draw at home by Academica despite the hosts generating most of the scoring chances.
Saturday's other contest saw Setubal claim a 2-0 triumph over Rio Ave with goals coming from Rafael Martins in the first half, Estoril and Arouca finished 1-1 on Friday, Belenenses topped Braga, 2-1, behind goals from Miguel Rosa and Filipe Ferreira, and on Monday Nacional edged Guimaraes, 2-1, with an 87th-minute goal from Mario Rondon.
