Trevor Knight has started the season opener for the past two years for Oklahoma.

He beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Knight even accompanied coach Bob Stoops to Dallas last month for Big 12 Conference Media Days.

And on the same day Knight was told he was not going to be starting the 2015 season opener against Akron, he was announced as a team captain after an election by his teammates. Baker Mayfield was chosen as the starting quarterback.

Knight and linebacker Eric Striker were both elected captains for the second season in a row. In addition to the two, center Ty Darlington, guard Nila Kasitati and defensive lineman Charles Tapper were also elected captains.

It's been a bit of a ride for Knight, who is 11-4 as a starter, including that Sugar Bowl win over Alabama. However, he has only completed 57 percent of his career passes and was inconsistent in several Sooner games last season.

"Knight has the respect of the team," Stoops said to The Oklahoman.
