The 6-foot-10 sixth seed smacked 21 aces in taking care of two-time Vienna champion and heavy Austrian crowd favorite Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) to reach the quarterfinals on the hardcourts at Wiener Stadthalle.
In first-round action on Day 3, fifth-seeded Czech Lukas Rosol handled Slovak Lukas Lacko 6-2, 6-4 and German Tobias Kamke overcame Italian Simone Bolelli 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The winner of this European indoor swing tournament will collect $120,000.
