Jets resume playoff push versus Oilers

(SportsNetwork.com) - It didn't take long for Drew Stafford and Tyler Myers to have a big impact in Winnipeg's lineup.

The two newcomers will try to lead the Jets to another victory on Monday evening in a home matchup with the Edmonton Oilers.

Stafford and Myers played in their second game with the Jets on Saturday after being acquired from the Buffalo Sabres less than a week ago and played big roles in a 5-4 shootout win over the Detroit Red Wings. Stafford had a goal in regulation and scored the shootout winner, while Myers had two assists and logged just under 23 minutes of action.

Michael Hutchinson made 25 saves through regulation and overtime, and he stopped all four shots he faced in the shootout as Winnipeg rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the game.

"Every point counts, so for us to battle back and get that extra point, it's huge," Stafford said. "There's no quit in this team."

Chris Thorburn, Blake Wheeler and Andrew Ladd also tallied goals for the Jets, who also got a pair of assists from Bryan Little and Dustin Byfuglien in winning for the third time in four games. Winnipeg also has a point in five of its last six (3-1-2).

The Jets have a five-point advantage for a wild card spot and trail the third- place Chicago Blackhawks by six points in the Central Division.

Winnipeg has won three of its last four versus Edmonton, claiming a 3-2 decision in overtime at home on Dec. 3 in the first of three meetings this season. Mathieu Perreault had the winner on a redirection just 17 seconds into overtime, while Jacob Trouba had a goal and two assists.

Ondrej Pavelec made 22 saves for the Jets, while Ben Scrivens, currently out with a lower-body ailment, posted 23 stops in defeat.

The Oilers conclude a six-game road trip tonight and look to break even on the swing. They fell to 2-3-0 on the trek with Saturday's 7-2 setback to the Ottawa Senators.

Viktor Fasth made 12 saves before getting pulled early in the second period after getting beat twice in a 16-second span. Richard Bachman made his season debut in relief, yielding four goals on 27 shots.

"It was too many odd-man rushes and not enough sustained offensive-zone time. That's a pretty bad recipe," said Oilers defenseman Andrew Ference.

Derek Roy and Mark Fayne supplied the goals for Edmonton, with the defenseman Fayne snapping a 52-game goal drought.
