Winston-Salem, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Two-time champion John Isner was among the third-round winners Wednesday at the Winston-Salem Open, a final U.S. Open tune-up.
The top-seeded American fired 17 aces in a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win over No. 13 seed Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan on the hardcourts at Wake Forest University.
Isner, who hails from nearby Greensboro, North Carolina, will face Czech Lukas Rosol in the quarterfinals.
The seventh-seeded Rosol rallied to beat 10th-seeded Spaniard Pablo Andujar 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
American Sam Querrey defeated second-seeded South African Kevin Anderson 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. He will next battle Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Garcia-Lopez, the tournament's fifth seed, outlasted 11th-seeded American Donald Young 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Meanwhile, ninth-seeded Taiwanese Yen-Hsun Lu whipped eighth-seeded Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-2 and 14th-seeded Italian Andreas Seppi got past France's Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Lu and Seppi will tangle on Thursday.
Another quarterfinal will pit 6-foot-8 Pole Jerzy Janowicz against surging Belgian David Goffin, as Janowicz knocked out 12th-seeded Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 and the qualifier Goffin ousted 15th-seeded Finn Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Goffin has won his last 25 matches, including a recent ATP title in Austria and three straight Challenger Tour championships.
