Injured Bolland skates briefly with Chicago teammates

CHICAGO -- One day after skating on his own for the first time since a reported concussion on March 9, Blackhawks center Dave Bolland joined his teammates on the ice Saturday morning for a quick workout.

Bolland was not made available for comment after the practice at Johnny's IceHouse West, but Chicago coach Joel Quenneville seemed happy with what he saw from the injured pivot. The Blackhawks are holding out hope Bolland is able to return for the first round of the playoffs should they make it.

Chicago needs one point in the regular season finale Sunday against Detroit at United Center (12:30 p.m. ET, NBC, TSN) to clinch a playoff berth. The Blackhawks can also get in if Dallas loses to Minnesota later in the day.

"He looked alright," Quenneville said of Bolland. "He is still not cleared for contact but he made real good progress over the last three or four days. We'll continue to see how he's progressing and hopefully he keeps progressing at a real rapid rate over the next few days."

Quenneville said the Blackhawks will continue to take it day-by-day with Bolland, but the fact that he's skating now is a big deal considering just a few days ago it didn't appear he was close to returning to the ice.

Bolland hasn't played since Tampa Bay defenseman Pavel Kubina hit him with an elbow to the head. He will miss his 14th straight game Sunday.

"Hopefully he feels good and he's able to keep going," Quenneville said.

Bolland's teammates certainly want him back.

"[Bolland] is one of our top centers and he's a good player, obviously he can help this team," goalie Corey Crawford said. "I don't know where he's at right now, but hopefully he's ready soon. We can't be too worried about that right now. We've got other things to focus on."
