INDIANAPOLIS – The IndyCar Series appears to be on verge of hiring Derrick Walker in its competition division.
Mark Miles, the new head of IndyCar owner Hulman & Co., said Friday he hopes to have an announcement next week. A few minutes later, three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti, who like Walker is Scottish, told The Associated Press that Walker had been hired last week.
Walker reportedly signed a contract during the series' stop in Brazil last week, something Miles denied then and again Friday.
Walker, 68, has long ties to open-wheel racing. He is a former team owner and has been the general manager for Ed Carpenter Racing this season. Carpenter is the stepson of former Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO and IndyCar founder Tony George.
