PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) Chris Iannetta hit a two-run homer in his spring training debut for the Seattle Mariners, who opened their exhibition schedule with a 7-0 win Wednesday over the San Diego Padres.
Seattle's Scott Servais and San Diego's Andy Green made their managerial debuts.
Iannetta, the projected opening day catcher, homered in the second inning with Seth Smith on base. Iannetta added a sacrifice fly in the fourth for his third RBI of the day. He hit .188 with 10 home runs as a part-time starter with the Los Angeles Angels last season.
''Made a couple of changes to the swing. Early on I was really fighting myself in (batting practice),'' Iannetta said. ''To get in a game and not think and just see the ball felt good. We'll see what happens.''
Franklin Gutierrez also homered for the Mariners, a solo shot in the fourth.
Gutierrez, after two full seasons with the Mariners in 2009 and 2010, has missed large parts of the subsequent seasons with injuries and spent 2014 out of action with recurring stomach problems. He split 2015 between Triple-A and the majors, where he finished the season with good numbers.
''It's only the first game, just trying to make contact,'' Gutierrez said. ''Not trying to think about anything, just go out there and have fun.''
Seven Mariners pitchers, including starter James Paxton, combined to allow only four hits. Paxton threw two scoreless innings.
Leadoff batter Melvin Upton Jr. was the only starter to get a hit for the Padres.
''I think Scott Servais thinks this managing thing is really easy right now,'' Green said.
STARTING TIME
Padres: Robbie Erlin, who made three starts for the Padres last September, is competing for a spot at the back end of the rotation. He pitched a scoreless inning before giving way to Rule 5 draft pick Luis Perdomo, who is also being looked at as a starter or long reliever.
''I was little bit up in the zone, probably a little overanxious,'' Erlin said. ''It was definitely exciting (being) the first one out of the gates. I tried to be as ready to go as I could be.''
Perdomo gave up Iannetta's home run, one of two hits plus a walk in one inning.
''It wasn't a great day, but I'll keep working hard to make the most of every chance I get,'' said Perdomo, who has never pitched above Class A.
Mariners: Wednesday was important for Paxton, who spent more than three months on the disabled list with a strained left middle finger and made only 13 starts. Paxton is looking to make the starting rotation, with four spots likely already set. ''First time out it felt like I was pounding the strike zone pretty well,'' Paxton said. ''Tried to do too much on a few pitches but I felt it was a really good starting point for spring training.''
TRAINER'S ROOM
Mariners: OF-DH Nelson Cruz didn't play due to knee soreness, but could be in the lineup as soon as Thursday.
TRANSACTION
The Mariners signed 1B-OF Efren Navarro to a minor league contract. Navarro, who has played in 130 major league games with the Los Angeles Angels, has a .246 career batting average.
UP NEXT
Padres: San Diego stays at the Peoria Sports Complex, which it shares with Seattle, as the home team against the Mariners on Thursday. RHP Philip Humber is the scheduled starter.
Mariners: RHP Nathan Karns, competing for a rotation spot after arriving in a trade with Tampa Bay in the offseason, is scheduled to start against San Diego.
