RALEIGH, North Carolina, Sept 22 - The Carolina Hurricanes have signed long-time general manager Jim Rutherford to a four-year contract extension, the National Hockey League (NHL) team said on Thursday.

Rutherford, 62, is in his 18th year in the post and the former NHL goaltender is the second-longest tenured general manager currently serving in the league.

The new deal runs through the 2015-16 season. Financial terms of the contract were not released.
