Matt Howard scored 17 points and Butler shot 56.9 percent Friday night in whipping Detroit 87-64.

Khyle Marshall added 16 points for the Bulldogs (13-5, 5-1), who are tied with Valparaiso atop the Horizon League standings. Andrew Smith scored 15 points, Shawn Vanzant 14 and Shelvin Mack 10.

The Bulldogs made 29 of 51 shots and did even better from 3-point range, hitting 10 of 17 (58.8 percent).

Chase Simon's 19 points paced the Titans (10-8, 4-2), who had only three assists on 21 baskets. Chris Blake scored 15 points and Jason Calliste 11.

Three consecutive baskets by Smith broke a 12-12 tie and put Butler ahead 18-12 with 11:59 left in the first half. Detroit never led again.

The Titans went scoreless the last 5:26 of the first half, watching a 33-20 deficit balloon to 42-20 at intermission. The lead peaked at 30 in the second half.
