Rookie Chase Elliott is the latest to jump on the retro bandwagon, as late Friday afternoon, Hendrick Motorsports unveiled his throwback paint scheme for the Bojangles' Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
In the Labor Day weekend Darlington race, Elliott will wheel an old-school yellow-and-black No. 24 NAPA Auto Parts Assurance of Quality Chevrolet SS.
According to a team, the scheme is based on a design introduced by NAPA in 1963, with the logo being the last version before the modern day yellow-and-blue look seen today.
"The logo introduced in 1963 was meant to remind customers that NAPA was nationwide and represented quality with knowledgeable employees -- traits that still hold true today," the team said in a release.
"The yellow and black is based off of NAPA's old logo," Elliott said. "The logo was actually on one of their delivery trucks in the 1960s, and we modeled the entire paint scheme off of that truck. I think it turned out really good. I like it, and I'm excited about running it in Darlington. I think we have a car that will certainly stand out, which is good."
Elliott has had a strong rookie season replacing Jeff Gordon in the Hendrick No. 24. He enters Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway (FOX, 5:30 p.m. ET) seventh in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points standings.
Elliott qualified 12th for NASCAR's longest race.
