After losing the starting quarterback competition, Matt Cassel has also lost his job in Buffalo after being one of five players released by the Bills.
Cassel's release was announced Saturday, when NFL teams had to establish their final 53-player roster. The decision to cut the 10-year journeyman came as a slight surprise. A day earlier, Cassel said he was given no indication from the team that he should be worried about his job.
The Bills acquired Cassel in an offseason trade with Minnesota. He spent the spring and summer competing for the starting job which was eventually won by Tyrod Taylor.
Former starter EJ Manuel is the only other quarterback on Buffalo's roster.
The Bills also cut defensive tackle Red Bryant, center Dalton Freeman, safety Jonathan Meeks and linebacker Kevin Reddick.
