A huge contingency of fans bolted for the exits early on Monday during the game between the visiting New York Mets and Washington, and Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper wasn't happy about it.
Harper and Co. lost 8-5 in the first game of a three-game set that could determine if the Nats have any chance to catch the Mets in the NL East. Washington fans have been disenfranchised with their underperforming squad for most of the season, and they showed their displeasure by leaving early.
The Mets scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-5 lead. After the game, Harper called the mass exodus "brutal." -- See video above.
By the time the ninth inning came around the ballpark was almost a ghost town.
Harper didn't help the Nationals much on Monday, going 0 for 4 with three strikeouts and a walk.
Because the second-place Nats are chasing the Mets in the NL East, losses in this series hurt all the more. This one dropped Washington five games back of its divisional rival. With just 25 games left, there is not much room for errors.
The two rivals play five more times, so while things look gloomy now for the Nats, there is still time to turn things around.
