Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Goldschmidt's two-run homer helped the Arizona Diamondbacks avoid being swept with a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.
Nick Evans had an RBI double and Martin Prado scored for the Diamondbacks, who finished 4-5 on a nine-game road trip.
Starter Wade Miley (4-6) surrendered just one run on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts across 6 2/3 strong innings to earn his first win since May 10 against the White Sox.
Chris Johnson brought in the Braves' lone run with a single while Andrelton Simmons and Tommy La Stella each supplied two hits for Atlanta, which saw its nine-game winning streak come to an end.
Alex Wood (6-7) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs on just three hits and three walks across seven frames.
Arizona opened the scoring in the third. Miley worked a leadoff walk and Goldschmidt crushed a fastball off the left-field pole with two outs for a 2-0 lead.
"I wasn't sure. I knew it probably had the distance, but it started fair and kept going," Goldschmidt said on his home run. "I saw it hit the pole and come down. I was pretty happy."
Justin Upton walked to open the fourth for Atlanta, went to second on a ground out and hustled home on Johnson's single up the middle, cutting the deficit in half.
Atlanta stranded runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth. Miley's outing ended after giving up a two-out single to Christian Bethancourt and Evan Marshall walked Dan Uggla, but recovered to strike out B.J. Upton and keep the lead intact.
In the eighth, Simmons led off with a base hit up the middle off Brad Ziegler and Justin Upton took a one-out walk. The two runners moved up on Jason Heyward's groundout, but Johnson struck out for the third out.
"Home runs are going to come when they want to come, you can't rely on them too much," said Simmons on the team's lack of production with runners in scoring position.
The Diamondbacks tacked on a run in the ninth. Prado drove a one-out single into left and stole second on David Peralta's strikeout. Evans then greeted Luis Avilan with a pinch-hit RBI double to right.
Addison Reed worked around a leadoff single to record his 20th save of the season.
