Caen, France (SportsNetwork.com) - Marseille maintained its place atop the Ligue 1 table on Saturday as Andre-Pierre Gignac scored in stoppage time to rescue a 2-1 win for his team at Caen.
Caen looked to have snatched a point from the match in the 84th minute when Yrondu Musavu-King scored the equalizer 10 minutes after Alaixys Romao opened the scoring for Marseille.
But Gignac popped up in the dying minutes and fired a shot into the top corner, handing his team its seventh win in nine Ligue 1 matches.
Marseille was clearly the more dangerous side in the first half, but the visitors were frustrated by a lack of efficiency in front of goal, while Caen goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre also kept his side in the match with a fine stop on Gianelli Imbula from 12 yards before the break.
The opener finally arrived with 15 minutes to play when Romao got up to turn a header toward goal from Romain Alessandrini's cross, and the ball found the net after taking a slight deflection.
Caen responded 10 minutes later through Musavu-King to seemingly grab a point as he headed home a free kick from Jean Calve.
But in the closing moments of the game, Gignac supplied Marseille with a moment of brilliance to win the game when he hammered the ball into the top corner of the net from 12 yards.
Marseille moves five points clear at the top of Ligue 1 with the result, while Caen lost for the fifth time in nine games.
Rennes won for the third time in nine games on Saturday as Paul-Georges Ntep scored twice in the second half to lead his side to a 2-0 win over Lens.
Bastia remains second from the bottom in the league after a 2-0 home defeat to Lorient, which used an own goal from Bastia's Mathieu Peybernes in the 48th to take the lead, while Gilles Sunu scored another goal in the 62nd.
Metz could have moved into the top three with a win on Saturday, but the club yielded three goals in the span of 18 second-half minutes in a 3-0 defeat at Evian, while Nice and Montpellier played out a 1-1 draw as Lloyd Palun scored the equalizer in stoppage time for Nice.
