(Reuters) - The Kansas City Royals traded outfielder Melky Cabrera to the San Francisco Giants for left-handed pitcher Jonathan Sanchez and minor league prospect Ryan Verdugo, the Major League Baseball teams said on Monday.

Cabrera, 27, hit .305 in his only season with the Royals after spending five years with the New York Yankees and the 2010 season with Atlanta. He had career highs in batting average, home runs (18) and runs batted in (87) last season.

Verdugo, also a left-hander, went 8-6 in the minor leagues last season.
