New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - South Carolina remained the top team in the Associated Press women's college basketball poll.
The Gamecocks ascended to the top spot for the first time in the program's history last week, then beat Wisconsin and Syracuse to improve to 5-0. South Carolina received 20 first-place votes, one fewer than last week, and a total of 854 points from a nationwide media panel.
Notre Dame kept the second spot and preseason No. 1 Connecticut stayed third. The Fighting Irish earned 13 first-place votes, while the Huskies picked up one.
Texas, which also garnered one No. 1 vote, moved up two spots to fourth and is followed by Texas A&M, North Carolina, Louisville, Stanford, Duke and California. North Carolina, which beat Stanford last week, vaulted five places from 11th, while Louisville also rose five spots from 12th after knocking off Western Kentucky.
The second 10 consists of Baylor, Nebraska, Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, Michigan State, Oregon State, Rutgers, Georgia and Oklahoma State. Kentucky dropped four places from ninth after its loss to Illinois, while Tennessee tumbled 10 spots from fourth after losing to Chattanooga and Texas.
Syracuse, Iowa, Mississippi State, West Virginia, Arkansas and DePaul are the last teams ranked. Arkansas, this week's lone newcomer, and DePaul are tied for 25th.
