Frost downs Langer in playoff at AT&T Championship

San Antonio, TX – David Frost edged Bernhard Langer in a playoff on Sunday to win the AT&T Championship.

Frost and Langer both fired a 6-under 66 to overtake second-round leader Mark Calcavecchia and finish deadlocked at 8-under-par 208.

After matching pars extended the playoff, Frost rolled home a birdie putt on the second to secure his third Champions Tour victory.

Calcavecchia led through the first two rounds, extending his advantage to six strokes entering Sunday, but he stumbled to a 74 to finish in third place at 6-under 210.

"I putted bad on the front," said Calcavecchia. "I didn't hit it very good. I knew it yesterday, when I hit those bad drives on two holes (late in the round). I didn't feel comfortable."

Tommy Armour III carded a 67 and finished one stroke behind Calcavecchia in fourth, Kirk Triplett (69) and Willie Wood (70) tied for fifth at 4-under and Mark Mouland (67) and Tom Lehman (70) took seventh at minus-3.

Tom Kite entered the weekend at No. 31 on the Champions Tour money list and needed a strong performance to move into the top 30 and secure a spot in next week's season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Instead, Kite posted rounds of 70, 74 and 71 to finish tied for 13th place at 1-under 215 and remain at No. 31.

Calcavecchia had been a hard man to catch over the event's first two rounds, but he carded four bogeys without a birdie through his first 11 holes on Sunday to open the door for Frost and Langer.

Langer grabbed sole possession of the top spot with a birdie on the 12th and Frost was close on his heels.

The former was 1-up before the latter carded a birdie on No. 17 to pull even and both golfers parred the last to force a playoff.

"I wasn't planning on this," said Frost. "Only when I hit it close on 13 (to set up birdie) did I think that it was just Bernhard and I (with a chance to win)."

Langer had a chance to secure the win with a 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, but his attempt rimmed out of the cup, allowing Frost to extend the match with a par.

On the second playoff hole, Langer sent his approach through the green and missed with his third out of the rough. Frost then sealed his second tour win of the season with a 14-foot birdie putt.

NOTES: Frost paired with Michael Allen to win the Legends of Golf in April ... This was the last full-field event of the year ... Langer remained in first place on the Charles Schwab Cup Points list. Tom Lehman is in second place and Roger Chapman is in third ... Last year's winner, Fred Couples, did not defend his title as his balky back injury flared up once again.
