Poti, 37, announced his retirement Thursday through the National Hockey League Players' Association.
The longtime blueliner made one All-Star team, in the 2002-03 season with the New York Rangers, and helped the United States win a silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Poti had 69 goals and 258 assists for 327 career points in 824 games for the Oilers, Rangers, Islanders and Capitals. He did not play in a game this past season.
